Learning to draw by mouth

learn to draw - vespa in progress

Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw, or maybe even how to draw by mouth?  See these tips on how to learn to draw, from one who knows how, and draws entirely by mouth!

Most of this info applies whether you are drawing by mouth, or using your hand (or foot) if you have these.

How to draw by mouth – Jesse’s drawing tutorial.

  • Firstly, get a pencil from somewhere!
  • Then some paper. Preferably a blank piece, or if not, turn it over 🙂

Now seriously, this is where it gets techo;

Location Points

A good drawing is in the middle of the page, not in one corner, so if need be, make a few location points (small marks on the page),  these will help the drawing to end up central on the paper.

Drawing the Outline

Do the outline first, if it has a prominent outline. (but I don’t always do this)

location points come in handy. More marks for a start makes for an easier sketch. As you do the out-lined parts, you must remember to keep them in proportion, which is where the location points come in handy.

Adding the detail

Next, try to do all the definite lines and darkest points, but not too hard, as sometimes, (and quite often) you may need to rub them out!

Now, if things are starting to look a bit pear-shaped, don’t give up, as this is about ‘learning how to draw’, NOT being a pro first up! 🙂

Keep your eye regularly on the object you’re drawing, so you’re not making it up. If it’s not on the photo you’re looking at, don’t draw it.  Sounds like common sense right? Yep, it is.

As you get a good way on, stand back occasionally and see how it’s looking.  At this point, it’s quite rewarding, as it’s actually looking quite good!!

Shading the drawing

Next comes the shading. If you’re sketching a photo or print, black and white is the best, as colour pictures for beginners is harder.

Shade your drawing as you see it, if it’s dark, do it dark, if it’s light, do it light. The shading will make or break the result.

If you would like to use different pencils, feel free. (I only ever use one)

When you’re finished, hopefully you’re happy with it, and get going on another one…

If it’s not perfect, great!  It’s not meant to be, it’s an original by you!

A few tips for those attempting to draw by mouth;

  • Don’t eat at the same time.
  • Try not to yell, or even talk too much.
  • Dribbling is easy to do, so try not to. (this happens to me a bit) Have a tissue or something ready)
  • Keep level headed; if possible!
  •  Go for it.
